Current Interest – Othello

Hello everyone.

Hope all Is well.

So as I am in the middle of converting from blog to blog, I have decided to choose the most interesting pieces (of my blog) and share them with you!

Ok, so to begin, I thought that today I would share with you my current interest in classics. I am currently reading the play Othello, by the phenomenal play write himself William Shakespeare. And I have to say that I am so engrossed in the play that I am heavily addicted.

With the cunning and conniving Iago and his scheme to overthrow the Moor Othello, the drama within the contents is both rife and thrilling, two things which are very important to me when reading!

I have to say though that the only Shakespearian play that I have read throughout my twenty three years is in fact Macbeth. And this was a very long time ago when I was in junior school and rehearsing Macbeth for a school production.  I was nine years old at the time.

Since then I have reread the play  and thoroughly enjoyed the process but felt as if I was limiting myself to what I “knew” playing it safe by not expanding my mind to the other Shakespearian literature that is out there.

It was this notion that made me pick up a copy of Othello and sit down and enjoy the art that is created upon those pages.

It turned out to be the best decision of my life as I am no longer restrictive to what I read but open minded to theatre and play writes. Plays are another world entirely to a book worm like me. Don’t get me wrong, I am well aware how Shakespeare inspired the world of literature, I am not completely illiterate in that aspect, I read, I write but I have never actually attempted to sit down properly and read  a William Shakespeare play.

That my friends has now changed. I will make it a ritual that I will read a Shakespeare play at least once a month and write about how it made me think, feel etc.

because I am only half way through Othello at the moment, I will have to blog again on letting you know my ‘in depth’ thoughts.

Until then remember, ‘don’t be afraid to broaden your minds’ you never know when that extra knowledge might help.

Take care!

  1. Congratulations on discovering Shakespeare. I’ve only read two of his plays (Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice), but I loved both of them. Shakespeare’s just so much richer and more lavish than most things you read. I can’t wait to read more of his plays. Right now, I’m trying to decide between Richard III, King Lear, and this one.
